This photo was taken in Pemba, one of the islands that make up the Zanzibar Archipelago. Usually people come here to relax and scuba dive. But I’m here with the UNHCR to cover a bizarre story about a group of refugees who fled 11 years ago, what many people perceive as paradise only to end up living in Mogadishu, dubbed the most dangerous city on earth. More than 2000 people fled the spice islands in 2001, after a bloody crackdown by the government in the wake of election results. Now the first group, comprising 38 people, are returning following an improvement in the political situation. This photo is the sister of one of the refugees who has returned. It is the first time she has seen her brother. She embodies the hope for a better future.
