Postcard from Harare

These were some of the thousands of school children who turned out to wish Robert #Mugabe a happy 90th birthday over the weekend. It makes him the oldest statesman in Africa and the second oldest in the world after Shimon Peres.
The kid in a the middle of the pic is a reminder that not everyone was in a celebratory mood in #Zimbabwe. The main birthday party happened in Marondera, a stronghold for his Zanu PF party. Mugabe received a warm welcome here but  many Zimbabweans were not cheering his 34 years in power. For them he has brought poverty, unemployment, corruption and little free speech.
I covered Mugabe's birthday event for the #BBC with my colleagues, correspondent Nomsa Maseko and shoot/edit Richard Atkinson. You can see our report here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-26316444
