All the world’s attention is currently on London for the 2012 Olympics. When Africa and the Olympics are mentioned together, one immediately thinks of long distance runners from Kenya or the football exploits of Ghana and Cameroon. But more and more Africans are branching into other sports that haven’t been traditionally African. Take the case of Johny Akinyemi. He will be making history at the London 2012 games by becoming Nigeria’s first Olympic canoeist. Johny has big plans to inspire other Nigerians to follow in his wake. I had the pleasure of meeting and filming him in action at the Olympic canoeing venue in London.
This is his story.
This feature was shot on a Canon 5d Mark 11 and a Go Pro Hero 2. It was filmed for the Focus on Africa TV news bulletin on BBC World. Interview by Tomi Oladipo. Produced by Kathy Harcombe and Pramod Morjaria.
