The Man Who Designed South Africa’s Iconic Flag

May 10, 2014

To mark 20 years of democracy in South Africa I travelled to Pretoria to interview Fred Brownell, the man who designed the country’s iconic flag. He got the original idea for the design from the chasubles worn by Anglican and Catholic priests, but it nearly ended up looking like the nuclear peace symbol. Two decades later South Africa’s flag is one of the three most recognised flags in the world.
