This week I attended the BBC’s News Festival. Its an annual event where organisation’s staff get to hear leading figures inside and outside the organisation debate the issues dominating the headlines and the challenges facing the media.
I was looking forward to listening to Helen Boaden, the head of BBC news. Her session proved a real dissapointment. More than half of the discussion centered around the introduction of a new telephone system which has been riddled with problems. She did get grilled on management salaries. Rob Gallo has more on his blog about this. But sadly, there was very little discussion about the major challenges facing BBC news in the 21st century.

What was startling for me was hearing Patrick Hennessey’s fresh-faced and altogether positive insights into what is really being discussed between british soldiers in Afghanistan.
Also interesting was how BBC is not allowed to refer to troops as ‘our troops’ (instead the more impartial ‘British Troops’). Tricky.
